Digital technologies are more and more introduced into design and construction. And this is not only information modeling, but also other modern solutions that simplify the work of specialists and make it more efficient.

Officials of the Ministry of Construction and market players are both sure that the transformation of the construction industry is impossible without the introduction of advanced digital technologies. Some solutions are already in use, others are still awaiting their turn.

Good form rule

When people mention "smart" technologies in design and construction, first of all, everyone remembers BIM. Five to seven years ago, information modeling was almost unknown for many Russian companies. But now this technology is used in their work by more than half of all large design organizations. Developers still use BIM less. However, there is a strong upward trend.

According to Aleksey Semyonov, head of the department of information technology at SPbGASU, the use of BIM at the design stage in the next five years will already become a rule of good form. All the prerequisites for this already exist. The introduction of BIM in subsequent stages, in his opinion, will take longer. Here we can rely on international experience in the implementation of BIM in the construction industry.

“In general, if we talk about new technologies, at the moment software is being actively developed and supplemented, including domestic software, for use at the stages of construction and operation. In addition, 3D scanning, 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality technologies can be used to work with information models of buildings. All this sounds like science fiction, but in some organizations it is already used. Working with these technologies leads to the need to form new competencies among university graduates, to modernize old specialties and open new ones. SPbGASU is actively working in this direction. Therefore, when technologies become widespread, our graduates will be ready for this, ” Alexey Semyonov said.

Many design organizations already use BIM and other technologies and combine them with each other. Specialists in their work already use 4D-, 5D-design, photogrammetry and laser scanning, as well as virtual and augmented reality technologies. Also platforms are already in cloud services. For example, Autodesk does photogrammetry in the cloud, and models for the forge viewer are processed there. As a result, only the browser remains on the computer of the designer and builder.

According to Pavel Nedviga, chief specialist in building information modeling at Renaissance Construction, it will take from two to three years for a deeper implementation of these new technologies in design. Also, during this period, the investment assessment of the project based on the information model will become commonplace. Machine learning & Data science will remain relatively atypical technologies. So far, there are only few examples of their use. But the demand for this direction will grow in the coming years. Boris Vorobyov, Deputy General Director of PSS GRAYTEK LLC, agrees with his colleagues. According to him, today BIM technology has gained a steady distribution in design and is increasingly being implemented in construction management. He notes that now the industry is spreading the practice of submitting projects for state examination in BIM format, calculating the cost of an object on its basis. Also, specialists use 3D coordination and collision detection, automated verification of compliance with project standards, etc.

In a "single window"

According to Dmitry Mordvintsev, head of business at Advalange, there is a separate need for a convenient reporting mechanism. In this area, an excellent tool that increases the efficiency of project implementation is the BPM system. It allows you to automate the interaction between the state customer, the general contractor, local performers in a “single window” format and promptly provide consolidated reporting to the auditing authorities. The key difference between BPM systems is the consolidation of all construction processes in a “single window” format. It is also possible to connect third-party systems, such as online video surveillance of an object, cartographic services, and the formation of various information boards for all participants in the process.

“Regions, corporations and design organizations that have already implemented such systems note a significant release of resources from routine work. All participants in the process are assigned formalized areas of responsibility. Full control of the target execution of the project budget is carried out. What is especially pleasant is that these systems are 100% Russian developments and are being implemented by domestic companies, ” Dmitry Mordvintsev added.

Sergey Lutsenko, General Director of LLC “Dorians”, adds that drones in combination with satellite dishes will undoubtedly help design companies in the future. Already, there are several proposals on the market where the drone removes the planned position from above, and a GNSS receiver standing on the ground tracks its altitude position. Using this combination, it is possible to carry out topographic surveys and carry out construction support. Also, in his opinion, over time, 3D printing technology will burst into construction. And it will be printing according to pre-developed drawings from various materials, not only from polymers, but also from steel and concrete.


Kirill Nyashin, Head of Construction Information Modeling Department, “Renaissance Construction”:

- Currently, for small objects, there is a shift of design to cloud services. They also use laser scanning. This helps to get more accurate amounts of work, material, as well as calculate their cost. At the same time, 4D modeling in such projects is usually used for sections of structural solutions and facades. For large and critical facilities, going into the cloud is still questionable point from a security point of view. In addition, there is a likelihood of closure of cloud solutions for government-ordered objects. This factor will slow down the development of cloud solutions at all stages of design in this segment.

However, in general, technology is advancing very rapidly. Use of the operational model of the building and paperless acceptance of objects for examination are becoming more and more commonplace. Also, AR technologies are increasingly being used at the construction site to control the mounting.  VR conferences are held between geographically distant offices to discuss the model of the facility.

Timofey Tatarinov, General Director of the IT-company “Mobile Solutions for Construction”:

- In design, the transition to BIM becomes more and more noticeable. In construction, digital technologies should be divided into “human” and instrumental ones. Instrumental control is carried out using drones, laser scanning, point clouds. I would like to believe that in five years' time in the construction industry we will find widespread use of compact lasers, scanners or drones, which will promptly transmit the status of the current construction progress. Moreover, many of the technologies used now are becoming more accessible every year.“Human” technology is a growing interest in visual quality control. Companies with large construction volumes are aiming at creating a unified information space for data exchange. It is especially important for the development of the industry that the analogue general work log goes digital. Technically, everything is ready for this

New IT technologies in the construction industry did not appear for a long time, everything was developed in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. Now we need to look at what solutions are emerging based on these technologies: artificial intelligence, Big Data, VR / AR. But for example, VR on a construction site has not yet found a normal application, at best, it is used in training.

Artificial Intelligence and Big Data is where things are going. All this can be applied both by managers, construction directors, general directors, and directly by executors, engineers. However, now there are no such solutions not only in Russia, but also abroad.
